Oil prices surge as OPEC reaches deal to cut production by 1.2 million barrels

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has agreed to cut supply by 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd) to 32.5 million barrels, the head of the organization announced. Ahead of the official announcement, Bloomberg broke the news, quoting an unnamed delegate in Vienna. Crude prices soared more than 7 percent on the report. Chennai Commissioner of Police S George has been transferred ahead of the RK Nagar bye-elections on April 12. The Election Commission on Saturday ordered Commissioner George’s transfer. Karan Singha has been posted as the new Commission of Police as per an order from the government. George's transfer comes in the wake of opposition party, the DMK urging the Election Commission to move George out from the post for the “smooth conduct of the poll”. A delegation comprising MPs TKS Elangovan, RS Bharathi and Tiruchi Siva had filed a petition before the EC on March 17. GST to give level-playing field to organised retail: Report

Post implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST), organised retailers are expected to get a level-playing field, edging out unorganised players in the medium-term, a report on retail industry has said. While the tax on branded apparels (textiles) is not known, a revenue neutral rate for apparel industry would be 12-15 per cent, the report by CARE Ratings said. "Any rate above this would affect demand in the short term as companies will pass on hikes, if any, to consumers," the report noted. "Nevertheless post the initial interruptions, GST would reduce competition from the unorganised sector and provide a level pitch to the organised branded players," it pointed out. Also, with the current tax regime, retailers have been paying service tax on most of their operating costs. AIADMK (Amma)’s RK Nagar candidate TTV Dhinakaran filed a complaint with the Election Commission against rival faction AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) for manipulating its poll symbol – the electric pole. Alleging that former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam’s party had manipulated the electric pole to resemble the now frozen two leaves symbol of the AIADMK, Dhinakaran stated in his complaint that it would confuse people during the election campaign. Last Wednesday, the Election Commission had frozen the AIADMK’s two leaves symbol and barred the two factions – VK Sasikala and OPS – from using the party name. This after OPS’s faction had staked claim to the two leaves symbol for the upcoming RK Nagar bye-elections. Vaiko meets protesting farmers in Delhi, promises agitation if Centre doesn’t meet demands

MDMK Chief Vaiko met farmers from Tamil Nadu, who have been protesting in New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for the last thirteen days, and promised to hand over their list of demands to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday. Over 80 farmers from the delta region of Trichy, Karur and Thanjavur have been protesting in the capital since March 23, dressed in loincloths and carrying skulls of farmers who committed suicide. They have been demanding that the Centre immediately release funds to compensate them for their crop losses, declare Tamil Nadu a drought hit state, and waive off their debts. New Delhi : Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday said there are several projects lined up for making railways more innovative in the country, but added that there is a death of funds despite due assistance from the Centre. "We have to look into how to finance the future of the Railways. We have already raised some but we need more money. Everybody has to contribute towards it," Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu told new agencies. Aiming at a major push for infrastructure, the Railways will raise Rs 35,000 crore with World Bank assistance to create a separate fund for investment in the rail sector. Currently, various innovative financing models are being undertaken as extra-budgetary resources like a loan from the LIC, PPP models and joint ventures with state governments for rail development projects.
